Introduction

To continue my fine tradition of optimizing MS’s latest OS, I have here my findings to date. If you are looking for Windows 7 Retail information, you are almost in the right spot.

Before adjusting your service settings, ensure that your system has already installed all updates by “checking now” for any available updates via Windows Update. At this time, it is best for you to ensure that all services are set to the default values before updating your system.

Breakdown of all changes to date: Windows 7 Information Changelog.

I cannot possibly test all configurations extensively (meaning, each persons specific computer needs), but what I can offer is what “works for me” and the obstacles I have came across so you do not have to discover them on your own. If information on this page needs a revision or expanded, please check out the forums.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations are now online. The Registry Files and Custom Registry Tools are also updated. I have not made it to the wiki yet, but will do so “soon”. If you are wondering where the Windows 7 Retail Configurations are, no worries, they are just archived.

Introduction

Many people have asked for a “one-click” type of solution to Windows 7 Services. This page is my answer. Even though it takes more than just “one-click,” it will make things faster for you and assist in configuring your system for optimal performance.

Warning: Before you do anything, read EVERYTHING!

Notes for a Happier Computer and User

  • Do not use “msconfig” to disable services, type “services.msc” in the Run box instead! (why?)
  • Before disabling any service, check out the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Services Information.
  • All of these services are “Standard” with Windows 7 Service Pack 1. If you discover something other than these listed here running, another program installed them.
  • After adjusting your service settings, reboot your computer.
  • Before posting your question on the forums, see if your question has been addressed in the FAQ!

To-do List

  • DO back up any files that you cannot be without.
  • DO understand that editing the registry, no matter what method or extent, has risks.
  • DO use this information at your own risk.

The Don’t list

  • DON’T tweak your system randomly. Knowledge is power. Read and utilize the information I have available on my Services Configuration Guide, Services 411 Guide.
  • DON’T EVER, NEVER download and install a registry patch without first looking to see what you are applying!

Points to note

  • Modifying your services registry start up settings via these patches are GLOBAL. This means that what ever you do will effect all users.
  • You should recieve no errors when applying these patches.
  • Safe mode is not required.

Additional Information

  • Everyone should download and view the files on their local system to see what is in there before applying.
  • To EDIT the file, Extract the .zip file and save it somewhere on your local hard drive. Use “Notepad” to view the file or just right-click, select “edit” and away you go!
  • To APPLY the patch, or restore your previous backup registry file, double-click the file or right-click and select “merge.”
  • After applying the registry patch, reboot to see the effects of your tweaking.
  • I have tested these files on multiple systems and you should have no problems UNLESS you do not follow the instructions on this page. :)
  • All services that have the ability to be installed or uninstalled via Add/Remove Windows Components are not listed here. This is in an effort to not break existing configurations.
  • Several services that normally are “not” enabled are placed into automatic with these files. Two such services are Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service and WLAN AutoConfig. This is also in an effort to not break existing configurations (like a laptop connecting wirelessly) when, for the most part, people download these files to “fix” things.
  • A few services cannot be modified with a registry file. They are not listed here.

Services “Start” Key Modification

This section contains files with ONLY the “Start” key and “DelayedAutoStart”. For example:

The “Application Experience” service, this information is applied for the “Default” configuration:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AeLookupSvc]

“Start”=dword:00000003

For the key “Start,” the values are:

  • 00000001 ~ A system service that loads/starts very early on. Will not be used here.
  • 00000002 ~ Automatic
  • 00000003 ~ Manual
  • 00000004 ~ Disabled

Also, for the key “DelayedAutoStart,” the values are:

  • 00000000 ~ No
  • 00000001 ~ Yes

I updated my World of Warcraft character stats to reflect that my main priest is level 85.

Todays FFIV newsletter spam made me laugh. I played FF14 for about 2 hours after it was hot off the press. In its state, I cannot see how anyone can turn the game around to make it any better. Basic gameplay mechanics are wrong as well as the lack of a tutorial of any sort. Which ends up with you killing one rabbit, then make a shot at another and die… for hours.

Screw that. I understand that FF14 “just came out” and it does not have the development time of 6 years behind them like World of Warcraft does, but for the love of all things gaming: get the basics right!

Official juice is at the link below while I have quoted and gave some rant-like responses.

While more than two months have passed since the official launch of FINAL FANTASY XIV service, we deeply regret that the game has yet to achieve the level of enjoyability that FINAL FANTASY fans have come to expect from the franchise, and for this we offer our sincerest of apologies.

At least they are sorry. I am sorry, also, that I paid money for the game. I looked on the box to confirm publisher at least 10 times during the one hour long install process that failed to complete (update failed to apply at 98%), followed by another hour uninstalling the game, just to try and install it over again. I did not include this idle time in my “total game time played” as it would greatly inflate what should have been “fun” time and instead it was WTF time. “Square Enix” I kept telling myself, “it will be a good game.”

After thorough deliberation on how to meet those expectations, it was decided that the most viable step was to approach improvements under new leadership and with a restructured team.

Translation: Management will be in the unemployment line as of yesterday.

We realize time is of the essence and are fully determined to provide our customers with quality service. It is because of this that we ask our customers to be patient until we are able to confidently present them with a concrete plan outlining FINAL FANTASY XIV’s new direction. The free trial period will be extended until that time.

Oh … just take your time, like you should have done before it ever hit the shelves. Pushing out crap for a Holiday drsdpm release does not mean you get a lot of people behind you or pull people away when the rival Blizzard kicked out an oustanding sequel to their MMO with little or no issues. That is what time affords you. I can play for free? If I could decipher the damn account management website, I would be all up for that.

Losts more in the release, but I just wanted a few cuts to comment on.

Now, time to figure out how to log back into the game, I may look at the pretty pictures once again, since that is the only thing going for it.

Update: After reinstall, large patches and a successful account reactivation (I canned it 3 days after original release), I logged back into the game, just to be greeted with downtime due to “maintenance”. As a side note, account expires January 3, 2011… I assume that it will be extended at that time.

The end of an expansion, namely World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King usually means that I should update my character listing. What are the totals?

Total Characters at level cap (80) = 13 (10 Horde, 3 Alliance)

Total time /played across all characters = 550 days, 14 hours, 58 minutes, 51 seconds

Total time /played @ level cap across all characters = 105 days, 14 hours, 57 minutes, 5 seconds

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my valued members and dedicated readers over the years. I give thanks to you as you keep the fire burning. Your support is greatly appreciated!

I basically grew up around dirt track racing my entire life, attending racing events all over California and Oregon since I was only a few months old. Now, I wish to break tradition in several ways and be on the race track instead of sitting in the grand stands as well as break the mold by being a geek inside a race car instead of a motor head. Thus, the birth of ”Black Viper Racing” and ”The Racing Tech”. I cannot do this alone, however, so I need your support!

For the 2011 season, I plan on getting out on the track at Yreka, California’s Siskiyou Motor Speedway and racing the dirt oval. Initially, I have only a street “run what you brung” car and not an official “race” car, but I have to start somewhere. Future plans include getting myself into a “Modified” class race car and really tearing up the dirt like only a geek can. More information and photo galleries of the build up process will be here: http://www.blackviper.com/category/news/racing/

I am offering three ways that you can become a sponsor of Black Viper Racing and “The Racing Tech”:

Individuals:

You may purchase a bumper sticker sized personal name plate for only $20 which is good for the entire 2011 season. This option is for individuals that desire to sponsor my efforts, but do not have a business they would like to promote. I will personally email you via the account on file with PayPal and thank you as well as ask what name, if any, you would like to have on your personalized name plate to be placed on my current race car.

For Companies:

For companies, I offer the option to purchase two bumper sticker sized name plate for only $50 which is good for the entire 2011 season. This option is for businesses that desire to sponsor my efforts and have a company they would like to promote as well as a website. I will personally email you via the account on file with PayPal and thank you as well as ask what name and website, if any, you would like to have on your personalized name plate to be placed on my current race car. The first bumper sticker sized plate will be the name of your business and the second one will be your companies website (domain) address. Businesses will also have a spot on my sponsorship page with a short description of their company’s product offerings as well as a link to their website.

Roll your own amount:

If the official sponsorship amounts are too low or too high, you may “roll your own” amount with the button above. Based upon donation amount, I will send a personal note of thanks, place your name on my sponsors page and/or include your name on my car.

Which ever method you choose, you will be supporting me in my efforts to get a geek on the dirt track. I thank you in advance for your support!
