How do I turn off and disable the "Automatic Update Service?"

I disable the service and also check the "disable" box. This is valid for Windows XP Home and Pro.

It is very important that if you decide to disable the Automatic Updates Service, you check the Windows Update site often to ensure the latest critical updates and security patches are installed.

Where do you find it?

Turning off "Automatic Updates"

Start, Control Panel Performance and Maintenance System Automatic Updates Tab
Start --> Control Panel -->Performance and Maintenance -->System -->Automatic Updates Tab.

Select "Turn off Automatic Updating."

After that, Disable and Stop the Automatic Updates Service.

Start Control Panel Performance and Maintenance Administrator Tools
Start --> Control Panel -->Performance and Maintenance -->Administrator Tools -->
Services Select Automatic Updates Service Disable the Service
Services -->Select "Automatic Updates Service" -->
(Double Click)		Disable and Stop the Service
