SETI @ Home

Ripped from the SETI@home Web Site:

"SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth."

Start up the executable and Register by using your E-Mail address and read the associated README file. It, as well as the SETI@home Web Site, contains much information as to how the program operates and where the project is heading. I am currently running it as much as possible and leaving the computer on at night...I want to see how my rank increases... :)

The program is processing MUCH information, so my advice would be to just have the program running when unattended via the screensaver option unless you have a super-computer stashed away in your den somewhere. In December, I plan on running a dedicated server just for SETI@home processing...After all, it is just going to be sitting there anyway! It only downloads/uploads information either with your permission or automatically...every day or two...not like it will require much bandwidth to accomplish that.
