With a Microsoft Security Update posted on August 2, 2010, this service has been modified from Manual to Automatic and can no longer be changed using services.msc. In Windows 8, this is not the case.

Manages user-mode driver host processes.

Additional Information

User-mode driver framework is a method of having drivers ran in “user space” instead of “kernel space.” This provides better system stability due to a situation of a driver crashing, it only brings down the driver and not the system. Such possible devices include cameras, media players, PDA’s and other USB connected devices.
