Windows 7

Default Description

Windows Firewall helps protect your computer by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network.

Additional Information

If you use an external hardware firewall/gateway/router between your computer and the internet, do not use IPsec (VPN tunneling, etc) and Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), then this service and the following group of services can be disabled:

I highly recommend that you do not disable the Windows Firewall unless you use a different software firewall or external hardware solution, but the services listed above are all involved with each other.

Issues Encountered

Certain applications could also fail during the install process. The reason could be that many applications like to “open up ports” on the Windows Firewall for communication to the internet (activation, phone home, updates, etc) and they do that at installation. If the Windows Firewall is disabled, those exceptions cannot be done and the installer fails. These situations should be reported to the particular software developers as a problem with “assuming” every computer is configured the same.
