Default Description

Manages the configuration and tracking of Component Object Model (COM)+-based components. If the service is stopped, most COM+-based components will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Additional Information

With Windows Vista Retail version, this service listed COM+ Event System and System Event Notification Service as depending on this service. This has been corrected in Service Pack 1.

Windows XP Pro x64

Default Description

Manages the configuration and tracking of Component Object Model (COM)+-based components. If the service is stopped, most COM+-based components will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Additional Information

You will receive, in the Event Log, an entry from “DCOM” complaining about not having this service running if disabled. If set to manual, many services report to it, so it will start anyway. For the fun of it, check:

“C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications”

On your system, see if you have any installed “COM+” Applications. This service is required for System Event Notification.

Additional Information

You will receive, in the Event Log, an entry from “DCOM” complaining about not having this service running if disabled. I am only aware of Visual Studio 6 Enterprise that uses COM+, but if set to manual, many services report to it, so it will start anyway. For the fun of it, check:

“C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications”

On your system, see if you have any installed “COM+” Applications. If not, you can probably disable this service with no side effects (besides the Event Log complaining upon reboots).
