I use  an APC UPS, more specifically, a Back-UPS BX1500G and two services are installed as software (PSPE) to control this piece of equipment on Windows 7 64-bit.

This service takes care of testing and actually switching to battery power if needed and through my testing is required.

  • Service Name: APC UPS Service
  • Description: PowerChute Personal Edition service for managing battery backup power events
  • Path to executable: ”C:\Program Files (x86)\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\mainserv.exe
  • Startup type: Automatic (Started)

The second service takes care of calculating energy usage and sending it to APC. However, even if sending the data to APC is disabled in the options or not (even though if it is disabled in the options, disk writes stop), this service can go upwards of 80MB used and 15% to 30% CPU usage on both cores 24/7. A bit overkill for me as it can’t possibly be needing that much resources to figure out my average energy usage:

APC Data Service dataserv.exe

High CPU and Memory Usage

  • Service Name: APC Data Service
  • Description: PowerChute Personal Edition service for managing battery backup power events
  • Path to executable: “C:\Program Files (x86)\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\dataserv.exe
  • Startup type: Automatic (Started)

I disabled APC Data Service (Start -> Administrative tools -> Service and associated “dataserv.exe” and rebooted and my CPU and memory was reduced significantly and have not discovered any drawbacks other then an exclamation point in the system tray APC icon stating that the data service is disabled. I have had issues in the past with PCPE using lots of memory and CPU usage with previous versions, so the “memory leak”, if it can be called that, is not fixed.

If you are looking to reduce memory and CPU load, this would be a good start.

A issue that has nagged me for many moons with Flash Player Videos is not being able to keep the video full screen on my second monitor while working on the primary monitor. Now, accoring to Adobe’s Flash Player 10.2 release notes, it is included by default, without having to modify DLL files. Download the latest release to activate this feature or update Chrome by going to the options and selecting “About Google Chrome” to update the browser automatically.

Enjoy!

I transferred the domain to a different server. As a result, “issues” are sure to surface. Contact me if you discover something that is just not right. :)

The web site connectivity has been spastic at best, the last few weeks. All due to a flaky modem power supply. All is up and running smoothly again and I appreciate everyone’s continued support as I worked through this most recent issue.

Many things have happened in the last few days, namely my wife’s computer crapping out and my efforts have been spent getting her system and mine back up and running. In any case, things will hopefully be back to normal in the next few days. I have lots of updates coming with new guides and extended information planned throughout the domain… it just all takes time. :)

Hang in there! Updates will be here ASAP.

Looks like the connections are back online early. Sweet. :)

Both internet connections went down at around 5:11 AM today. I contacted AT&T and they told me a network outage is affecting my local area. As such, the domain is and will be down until approximately 10:45 AM today. If you are reading this… connectivity is restored. :)

The main site, DNS, Email and forums will be coming down for about 30 minutes “sometime today” while I install additional memory and run a quick Memtest on the system.
Don’t phreak out. It will be back up shortly after (if all goes as planned at least).

The last thing that I wanted to do was toot a Microsoft horn, but I wanted to test out Windows Media Center with an Extender (XBOX 360) and stream TV. This test really is only for me to determine the minimum amount of service that need to be enabled/automatic for this function to work. This sounds like an easy task, but it took me several hours to finish it. (and several more months previously to jump into the task).

First off, my Xbox 360 does not have a wireless card in it, and sometime during our move, one of the cats or my wife ate the 100′ Ethernet cable that I had, but I have known for a long time that the WRT54G v5 Linksys router is capable of doing so with dd-wrt.com updated firmware. This router was just sitting around doing nothing as I upgraded my main routers to Dlink 655′s.

The warnings throughout the site say "you could make your router unusable," but in all honesty, I don’t think I would have ever used the old wireless access point again, anyway, so a bricked router meant nothing to me… but a router that can act as a bridge for my Xbox 360 magically would become useful.

The guide I used (to the letter) to get updated firmware with additional features is here:

http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/WRT54G5_CFE/

After getting the system set up and working, it was just a matter of connecting up and *bam* the Xbox 360 has a connection to my PC as a Media Center Extender.

Several other obstacles I encountered were that my previous service settings in Vista were too strict and I had to set them all back to default. Thus the posting yesterday about needing a registry file to set them back to default. I did it the old fashion way and all worked after 30 to 45 minutes. Now I need to go back and narrow down what "really" is needed and not just what "works." There the trick stands.

Anyway, after much fiddling, I got the systems to hook up and now I can watch internet TV in my living room from my XBOX 360 directly connected to a Linksys wrt54g v5 using www.dd-wrt.com firmware (which, by the way, is the best router firmware I have ever used). Kudos to the team.

Windows Media Center has come a long way and it is pretty good, even in "internet TV Beta" state.

Just if my readers were wondering "what" I actually do daily…. this is it. First was getting the PS3 to connect to my media server, now the XBOX 360 was an obvious extension (no pun intended) of this effort.

I will try and draft a more through "How To" outlining the exact steps that I took, but for now, I am going to go lay on the couch and… basically… chill and watch streaming TV.
